A "White Lady" haunts the hotel, and is reportedly seen between 10pm and midnight between late September and early October; she is supposed to be a servant girl who overheard plans for the Battle of Naseby and was murdered. She is said to be in white and wearing a white cap on her head, usually close to the linen rom. In room 3, there is a "Grey Lady" but details are scant. A spectral Cavalier has also been observed, as has a little girl in the restaurant, and "Mrs Priddy", though she has not been seen for some time. A more recent phantom (April 2023) is a man wearing a suit in the corridor that leads to the toilets. Apart from these apparations, a variety of miscellaneous activity has been noted over the years. A workman heard footsteps above him and a woman's voice but there was no floor in place above him during the refurbishment. The crying of a young child has been heard (probably the girl in the restaurant?), and someone felt as if they had been touched, accompanied by a giggle. Poltergeist-like activity has also been noticed too, with lights dimming and going on and off, the loud sound of furniture moving in "The Cromwell Room" and more dangerously, a manager being struck on the face by a glass and a bottle of orange juice; this same member of staff also had ashtrays explode in front of his face.
