Sutherland House56 High Street, Southwold, Suffolk IP18 6DN 01502 724544 Edward Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich stayed at Sutherland House where he met a young maid and his dalliance delayed him putting to sea to thwart the Dutch invasion fleet. He died in the fierce battle but the ghost of the maid, it is said, can be seen waiting for his return at an upstairs window. Update 2/3/22: Andy Rudd replied to my email asking about any recent happenings: "Our housekeeping staff frequently report odd goings on. In the top floor suite, things like draws opening, doors closing, tv’s turning on, stuff like that" |
