Ye Olde Black Cross

This public house is said to be haunted by a Royalist soldier. He has been described as wearing a cape and broad brimmed hat, and has been seen by the toilets, walking along a corridor and also upstairs in one of the staff rooms where it walked through a door, spooking a manager who said that he would not sleep there again. In 2016, the landlady said that she saw a little boy walk into her bedroom. Footsteps, bumps and creaking noises have also been heard coming from upstairs too; the girlfriend of a barman was terrified on a few occasions - first of all, when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs and then to her bedroom, where the latch lifted and the door opened, revealing no-one. The second time was when the bed depressed as if someone had sat down near her. Staff members also reported the sensation of being touched. Poltergeist-like behaviour in the kitchen is blamed on the ghost of a murdered girl. With regard to other incidents, the daughter of a guest said that another little girl had pushed her over when she went to the toilet. A guest staying over heard loud bangs and tappings coming from within their bedroom during the night; one of the bangs was accompanied by a hooded figure who walked across the room and through a wall. There have also been incidents of doors opening and closing. Finally, a disembodied voice heard in the bar area was heard saying "Turn it off!" - probably referring to the juke box!
A newspaper article in early 2024 mentions that ghostly criminals have been seen here, on account of the building being used a "holding pen" for miscreants who were sentenced to death and hung. There is also the ghost of a little girl, and unexplained images and figures have appeared on CCTV too.
