Brampton Bryan Castle

Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire

The remains are all that is left of the castle, and a tall spectral man, generally seen in the grounds in the autumn, is sometimes seen here. The figure has been identified by some as Oliver Cromwell himself; the homeowner Sir Robert Harley changed sides to become a supporter of the parliamentarian cause and after the Royalists damaged the castle during the siege, he decided to abandon it and build a mansion which was destroyed by a fierce storm - on the very day that Cromwell died. Harley had previously been on friendly terms with Cromwell but developed an dislike for him and the legend goes that the storm was Cromwell's ghost being "dragged through the park en route to Hell!"
