Kenilworth Castle

Castle Green, Off Castle Road, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 1NG

A lady in her twenties has been seen at one of the 1st floor windows in the Gatehouse, gazing towards Kenilworth; some say she is sewing, some that she is reading a book. Her clothing dates her to about the 1380s. A spectral coach and four comes charging out of the southern gateway, over the embarkment and vanishing towards Warwick, heading for the old Castle Hotel at the corner of Station Road and The Square. However, it is seen once every 100 years! A monk is also said to have been seen in the grounds too. The Gatehouse also has a room in which a crib can be found, which was once found to be rocked by someone invisible.

On 28th October 2025, properties manager Margaret gave a talk about ghosts at English Heritage sites, and a summary was placed on the Fortean Forums website; "She had her office in the gatehouse of Kenilworth Castle where her first encounter with the supernatural occurred. A visitor told her on her first day that the resident spirit liked her. Shortly after another visitor remarked on the re-enactor that was walking with her, dressed in late Medieval costume. There was no one walking with her and no one in costume. She became aware of the presence of a spirit she called Richard. Soft footsteps would come up the stairs and stop outside her office. Things would be moved about on her desk. A kettle boiled without human agency. Once, when in the garden, she saw her office window open. There was no one else in the gatehouse. Later she was required to move to another site and a series of accidents occurred, involving children falling off a mound. Then a woman claimed she was pushed off the mound by unseen hands. This ceased when she assured 'Richard' that she would be coming back."
