Thetford Guildhall

Market Place, Thetford, Norfolk IP24 2DS
01842754247

This building used to be the old assizes court and there is reported to be quite a lot of activity; equipment turns on with no power source or drains, jailors keys and doors knobs rattle by themselves, and people feel fingers on their arm and breath on the back of their neck. One witness claims that there is a little boy who stands on the stairs and asks her for help (the Guildhall used to be the children’s workhouse). In a performance of a witch trial the lights flickered red even though they were not turned on and they weren't on such a setting anyway. A contact who works here tells me, "When me and my colleague were talking in that room I said I hope the people in the building are happy we are telling their stories and the lights flickered. We have had poetry displayed on notice boards and then when I have come in of a morning the poetry has been face down in a line on the floor [and] removed from the board (the poetry was about the Guildhall). When I first started here I did my first historic event and I was so happy with how it went that when everyone left I just said in the top of my voice thank you wonderful building for all your amazing stories. I then heard a big scrape from the other room and the bin had moved from the side to the middle of the room."
