A number of phantoms were encountered in the old WHSmith store. The main phantom, who is invisible, is called "Bob" and normally limits his activity to the upstairs area, and footsteps heard are blamed on him. It seems that Bob doesn't like ladies and has tugged at their hair, knocked on their toilet cubicles when in use, and makes them feel dizzy and sick. Occasionally he does venture downstairs and acts in a violent manner, and has been known to throw a shelf off the wall, move objects and hides scissors. The other ghost is female and is much more gentle. She has been seen with the naked eye and on CCTV and is seen wearing a brown dress but only parts of her are visible. Her white sleeve was seen reaching for some cards, and a misty shape was observed nursing the arm of a member of staff who had been injured. This same member of staff hears the ghost when she is banking upstairs, and hears her say "no" when she makes a mistake.
