ex The Old Red Lion
Ashburton Road, Ickburgh, Thetford, Norfolk IP26 5JG
The Old Rectory was (is?) haunted by Rev Walter Metford who, according to legend, hid some of his valuables in the building and has returned from the grave to seek his treasures; however the places where his spectre has been observed have revealed no traces of his possessions. A sad episode is that a dog that had been left in the haunted room where his phantom has been seen became so frenzied trying to escape that it had to be put to sleep. It is not known how long the ghost was observed but two daughters of a family who moved in in the 1950s told me of some interesting aspects of the house, which had been left derelict for some time. The girls were teased by their brothers about the ghost but although they did not mention any visible apparitions, one of the ladies said one could hear the ghost walking around the house, the gravel crunching underfoot. But by this point the walkway had been cemented over.
