Pype Hayes Hall (Closed)
Pype Hayes Park, Chester Road (A452), Erdington, Birmingham, West Midlands B24 0HG
One of the ghosts is said to be Lady Bagot (whose family built the hall) who was murdered when she had an affair with a butler (at least one source says that they had a suicide pact when their liaison was discovered; some claim that she succumbed to a disease or that she died in a riding accident). Books, keys and crockery have been thrown around and doors open and close by themselves.
A 2015 newspaper article says that, "Apparently if you remove panels in the upstairs rooms you can spot the ghoul creeping around the entire property in Pype Hayes Park. It is said to have been spotted walking the grounds of Pype Hayes Hall every Friday 13th ... Nearly all the workers, past and present, felt an unease when walking through the park. When it was a children’s home many a time youngsters would run home to the hall and, out of breath but having reached the safety of the front door, frantically tell of ‘a man in a black cape’ who they said was chasing them." The article also talks of a local woman walking home through the park when she a young lady, dressed in an old fashioned yellow dress, drifting across the bowling green, who disappeared into the darkness. A night attendant saw a woman wearing similar clothes staring out of an office window early one winter evening when she was alone upstairs; the lady slowly turned to face her and then vanished. When the attendant went to the office where the woman had been seen, the room was locked found to be empty. The attendant never worked at the hall again. As a children's home, resident youngsters talked of seeing a ‘grey lady’ that smiled and looked down on them, while those who were ill "often confused chid care workers by thanking them for sitting on their beds and stroking their hair, when none of the workers had been near them." There are stories of servant bells ringing after being unconnected for years, books hurling themselves out of bookcases, the sound of footsteps (some of them sounding like they were on wooden floorboards even though the area was carpeted), line three of the telephone network lighting up when the operator was alone in the hall, classroom windows being found opened even though they had been secured, a carpet lifting off the ground, lights turned on in empty offices but upon investigation were off, a plethora of odd sounds including that of keys being thrown across the room and a fire being raked, ashtrays "whirling across [a] room" and plates and crockery being found smashed on the kitchen floor.
