Maddermarket Theatre

St John's Alley, Norwich, Norfolk NR2 1DR

This building used to be a Roman Catholic chapel and this may explain the phantom priest (some say he is a monk) seen here where the confessional booths used to be; the ghost has also been seen staring at the audience too and even followed a stage manager up a ladder! It is said that he is also seen on the cobbles outside the theatre. The spectre is said to be a priest who was interrupted (perhaps he died?) during a mass and is now hoping to complete it. The phantom is, according to one report, friendly; he "supposedly saved someone's life who was about to be struck by a falling light and even comforted actors who forgot lines or mess up their parts." On occasion, the smell of incense and footsteps have also been detected too.

Update 13/7/22: The theatre responded to my Facebook query about any recent phenomena: "...a few of my colleagues claim to have seen the monk in recent years, and there are plenty of whispers from the technicians about the atmosphere when working alone in the building late at night." My contact also said that he believed that the stage was built over an old crypt, with the bodies exhumed.
