Tutankhamun's Emporium

Manageress Sue Allen, the great niece of Howard Carter, gave some details on the phenomena and ghosts here. She talked of sightings of three spectres; "Nancy" a lady from the 17th or 18th century; "The Thin Man", who wears a stovepipe hat and is seen at the top of the stairs; and a "Downton Abbey"-style butler. She also notes other experiences unrelated to these visible phantoms; these include cold spots, which would seemingly come and go; footsteps heard downstairs when there was no-one there; telephones malfunctioning and lights tripping; and the smell of lavender and tobacco smoke. They would also come in in the morning and find that things had been moved overnight; as an example, they once found a box of 50 champagne glasses on the other side of the room, its contents smashed. And a painting of cat by Sue’s husband would sometimes be found face up on a nearby table-top. As of January 2023, staff and customers are subject to uncanny experiences quite regularly, probably about once a month, Sue estimates.
