Potter Heigham Bridge

Bridge Road, Potter Heigham, Norfolk NR29 5JD

On May 31st, 1741, Lady Evelyn Carew married Sir Godfrey Haslitt; her previous attempts to wed him had failed and it said that she turned to Black Magic, making a pact with the Devil in return for her soul. On the day of the marriage, the Devil sent demons who pulled Carew from her bed and dragged her to a nearby coach driven by four black horses. A skeletal coachman urged the horses on and the coach smashed into the bridge, shattering into pieces as it went into the water. Lady Evelyn's body was never found but the whole spectacle is said to be repeated at midnight on the anniversary every year. However, there would seem to be no historical basis for this tale!
