A "Grey Lady" is reputed to be seen around the village, but is more often seen at night in the churchyard. She is believed to be the daughter of the rector who sent her home to the rectory (since demolished) at Swithland a day ahead of the rest of the family who were on holiday in Yorkshire. She returned to find a drunken butler and that night, he broke into her barricaded room and killed her. Regaining his senses, the butler then cut his own throat in remorse.
