Hickling Broad

Nr Hickling Heath, Norwich, Norfolk NR12 0BT

In the early 19th century, Jesse Ducker was upset that his daughter Lilly was seeing a drummer in the Grenadiers, named John Sadler. He said that, as a test to see if their love was genuine, they could only see each other from opposite sides of the river bank. But one night, during a particularly harsh winter, Sadler disobeyed the instructions and skated over the thin ice to see his loved one. The ice cracked and he plunged into the icy water to his death. Soon after, the sight of a uniformed drummer was seen as evening started to fall, and the sound of his drum and the whistle he used to inform Lily that he was on the way has been heard.
