Psychics claim that a multitude of ghosts abound here; women and children and some characters hailing from the time that building hosted evacuees from London in the last war. A blessing of the building by the clergy does not seem to have purged some of these "ghosts." Apart from these claims, staff have reported a large number of phenomena, a fair amount of which occur on or near the middle staircase. These include; office door handles rattling and being turned (there being no one there) - sometimes the door would also open; tobacco smoke, variously described as originating from cigars, pipes or cigarettes; the sound of crying and of children giggling; a radio turning on and items falling from shelves; a chair being found spinning in an empty office at night; the sight of two small children dragging something behind them; and the smell of cornish pasties (!). Two members of staff gave unusual accounts; in the first, the worker used to have a bowl of sweets on her desk, and would often find it moved and empty wrappers left behind; while another employee asked out loud if anyone was still around as everyone else at the time was downstairs. She was answered "No!" from outside the room. There was no one around and she didn't know who had replied.
