An extremely old hostelry, there have been stories of paranormal activity here for (at least) several decades. These seem to have started before 1978 with the sighting of a man in a cloak in the back bedroom, (indeed, it has been said in forthcoming years that the ghost is that of a monk, nicknamed "Fred"). The publicans at the time encountered a few phenomena such as walking into something that was solid but invisible; and successive proprietors have reported strange "search lights" on the wall at night, footsteps, black figures, glasses falling off shelves, pictures being found removed from the walls, temperature drops and the sound of a purring cat - even though there was no such animal in the building. There has also been the claimed sighting of a man in RAF uniform seated near the door who vanished in the short period of time during which the witness briefly looked away.
