This building used to be a public house called "The Compasses" and in the 1980s was prone to bouts of poltergeist-like activity, including unexplained voices, people being tapped on the shoulder and a tray of glasses being hurled across the room, with the licensee ending up picking pieces out of the wall. In March 2010 landlord Michael Tucker shot his partner Becky Thorpe in the head, and then hid her body in a freezer in the shed. He believed that she was having a covert relationship with another man. Tucker was found guilty and sentenced to 26 years in prison, this being reduced by four years on appeal. Since then, the building has been remodelled and now operates under The Co-operative Group branding; although seemingly quiet at present, voices and footsteps had been heard in an aisle but there was no-one there when the area was checked, and a roll of bin bags went flying off the table in the bakery. The next door property, run by the "Index property information" also has had some brushes with the uncanny, including shadows, footsteps, chairs moving and lights flickering - although like the Co-op it is said to be quiet as of late.
