Myles Chater, the Deputy Manager provided me with some very interesting data on this impressive bar, which is a converted church, dating back to 1872 though the site has been a chapel since the dark ages.
Myles told me, "The main account is a man often seen on our mezzanine. Mostly this is on the right hand side as you walk in the building, though sometimes this has been seen on the other side too. I myself have seen this figure, which I can only describe as a very tall, jet black silhouette of a man, moving across the mezzanine from back to front. The glass walls around the mezzanine of course can reflect light as you move your eyes and make it appear as though someone is moving upstairs, though on at least 3 occasions I have seen this figure for a good few seconds, not just darting out the corner of my eye. This figure has been seen many times by dozens of people. The first time I saw this figure, I told the other team members, saying "I think I’ve just seen a ghost", at which point they instantly spoke of the exact phenomenon I had witnessed. Around 10 minutes later, our manager had disappeared as he had locked our binyard up and heard someone walking up the fire escape stairs. He had gone to investigate this, to find no one there." Myles told me in another email that, "it's a bit of an inauguration into the team once you see a tall shadow-like person walking/running up and down our mezzanine!"
"Another account is of our alarms triggering, which happens every few months. The alarms we have are dual sensors, only triggering when motion and a change in infrared occurs at the same time. The most recent one for myself was the sensor on the mezzanine. On one occasion, our old manager, a through and through skeptic, was called to check the alarm. As he arrived, he could hear people speaking inside the building, seemingly arguing. As he feared attempted burglary, he called the police, who arrived 5 minutes later. They entered the building, checking everywhere, to find no one there." Myles opened one email (on 9/1/2026) by saying that he had to just returned from going back to the bar because of the alarm being triggered for no cause.
"A third account is the only one I know of including any audio phenomena. Around 3 years ago, one of our bartenders was taking out the bins as part of our closing procedures. When she took the bins out, she heard a male voice right behind her say 'boo' (this story makes me laugh as it seems so silly). Assuming it was our duty manager (the only male working that evening), she turned around to find no one there."
"I have experienced seeing a figure in the binyard on two occasions. One was a couple of years ago. It was summer and it was just turning to dusk. I had been on shift for a good 8-9 hours so went outside to have a sit down. I sat on a keg and looked down at my phone. At this point, a person walked past me in quite a brisk manner. It took me a good 10 seconds to realise that no one was outside with me and had come from a way that had 2 one-way doors. I then went inside to find no one had been through that way at all. On a more recent occasion (probably November time) I went to the binyard for a cigarette. As I stood in the doorway, a black figure appeared at the end of the alley. It moved towards me at considerable speed, dissipating around 5 metres ahead of me. This was particularly strange as I didn’t feel alarmed at the time and didn’t feel like I saw anything, more felt what just happened in front of me. When going inside, I told one of the team leaders what I had just seen. He replied he had seen someone out there before. This has proven to be the closest any current staff member has come to saying they believe the place is haunted!"
Myles noted that, "although unverified, I have heard that there was a gallows where we now store our bins and kegs. Any individuals buried at the church were done so in crypts beneath our bar in the centre of the building. These bodies were exhumed and moved to St Mary’s up the road upon the closure of the church."
"The last account I have is from about a year ago (c.2025). I was closing the building and had finished up so let my staff go home whilst I ran up to the office (located in the bell tower) to get my phone charger. As I stood in the office, I realised I could hear voices downstairs. Voices as if the building was full. I can only compare it to the sound of a school assembly hall before the headmaster comes in. A real buzz of people talking, but there are so many voices you can’t make out what anyone is saying. I was frozen for a while, trying to work out if I was actually hearing what I thought I was. I stood in the same spot for around 20 seconds listening. As soon as I put my hand on the office door handle, the noise cut out. Not like people had stopped speaking, it was like a recording had been paused. It was then absolutely silent."
"There are many more stories, though most are very small. Objects moving, weird smells, sounds, footsteps etc."
Myles did admit that there no accounts from the current team apart from "the odd occurrence that the team will probably just chalk up to normal things like staff moving things or sounds from the ice machines dispensing." The premises would therefore seem to be quiet at present...
