George's Lane

In the 1930s, as a pedestrian headed down the hill towards Calverton, a figure all in black and wearing a large hat and a silver chain round its neck stepped out of a gateway. The witness remembered that the figure had a prominent nose. The character kept pace with the witness even when he became alarmed and ran but after a while it "glided away into the night." Drivers have also noted a figure materialise in their cars as they pass down the hill (one driver even claimed that someone tried to push her seat from behind as the car was enveloped in cold), and as a result taxi drivers are reluctant to take this route at night. One couple passing down the hill in 1992 saw a pair of legs, wearing what seemed like riding breeches, run across the road in front of both themselves and a bus coming in the opposite direction. Near the junction with Spindle Lane, another driver saw a man wearing nothing but trousers and a short sleeved top - entirely inappropriate attire for the weather. But then the witness realised that the man had vanished. And a lady living in a cottage at the end of the lane has talked about being awakened by a hooded figure that had a hand around her neck - and then it vanished.
