Lud's Church

This ravine was once the make-shift church in the 15th century for John Wyclif and his followers, the Lollards. However, the group was under threat of persecution, and a group of soldiers unearthed their den, ordering the Lollards to surrender. The congregation reached for their swords and one of the soldiers reacted instinctively, firing an arrow that killed Alice, the granddaughter of Lollard leader Walter de Lud Auk. The group buried the young child at the entrance to the ravine and then surrendered; it is said that her spirit is still seen where her remains were interred.
