George and Dragon Place1 Liverpool Road, Chester, Cheshire CH2 1AA A solitary Roman sentry is said to walk from one end of the pub to the other; some reports say that this only occurs in the cellar and that he is only ever heard while other versions of the tale say that the sound is of many men marching, perhaps on the old Roman Road (there are also stories that the building is said to have been built on an old Roman cemetary). Also in the cellar is a monk who is reputed to have been tortured and murdered there, and in the same area, a goblin-like figure has been observed too; and reports exist of screaming, crying and whistling in the cellar. Phantom footsteps have been heard on the 1st floor and more Roman soldiers observed in the bedrooms, alarming waking guests who find figures standing at the end of their beds. The pub is also said to be the haunt of a young girl who is racked with remorse after pushing her mother down the stairs. In the main body of the pub, lamps shades and other items have moved mysteriously. The manager a few years ago said, "In the managers accommodation I have had somebody whispering in my ear whilst trying to sleep, doors opening and closing and all sorts of strange things."
