Speke Hall

A "Grey Lady" (sometimes described as being white!) has rarely been seen here; according to a well-known but probably apocryphal tale, she is said to be Mary Norris, whose mind snapped when her husband, Lord Sidney Beauclerk (who was nicknamed "Worthless Sidney") gambled everything away. In a state of despair, she threw their baby out of the window into the moat where it perished. Mary is said to have killed herself soon afterwards. She is now said to walk the hall in remorse and has been said to appear at the window through which she disposed of her child. However, historical records show that the Beauclerk's son, Topham, lived to the age of 40! Stories abound that a phantom priest and a gardener from Victorian times also haunt this building. Cold spots, a cradle that rocks by itself, footsteps and the sound of children crying in the Blue Room have been reported too; it is in this latter room that visitors are told to "Get out" when they sight the phantom.
An employee told a newspaper in 2018 that from her first day she experienced many uncanny phenomena, including the following encounter; "I had come in the back door of the house and was on my way to my office. There was a staircase with a metal banister and when I looked at it a man was just standing on the stairs glaring at me. He was in 17th century Puritan dress with the big tall wide-brimmed hat and white collar, over a black coat. I had my dog with me and he just cowered right down and his hackles on his back were up and he was growling as we walked away. Everyone said that whenever you went up those stairs it felt like someone was coming down brushing past you." Although the employee never felt threatened in the house, this figure exuded a sende of menace.
