Ring O Bells

Glasses have been seen to move, fall off shelves and even explode by themselves; items (including rocks) have been thrown at people; strange noises such as footsteps and moaning have been heard; and a "Sad Cavalier" is said to be a resident phantom. He has been nicknamed "Edward" who was said to have been murdered by Cromwell’s forces when they marched through the town. A recent landlord has also reported that, 'there's an old room in the pub that's always colder than any other place even in the summer and that his last dog would also bark in the corner of the lounge as if he could "see something or sense something."' Author Ruth Roper Wylde also mentions that someone felt a hand on their shoulder from behind, and that there are also stories of shadow people and a man dressed in a grey suit dating to the 1930s. A 1989 document says, "Over the years, a cavalier has been seen many times in The Ring 0' Bells, dressed in plumed hat, lace collar and cloak and carrying a sword. He is described by the landlady as 'a friendly ghost, but sad looking.' Many times, unexplained footsteps have been heard in the cellar, and excavations there and in tunnels leading from it have uncovered helmets and a variety of seventeenth century weapons. Bones found under flagstones are thought to be those of a cavalier who was killed by enemy troopers in the parish church across the road."
