Turton TowerChapeltown Road, North Turton, Lancashire BL7 0HG 01204 852203 A spectral woman in a black gown has been seen in a chamber and walking up a spiral staircase; additionally, an old cradle has been seen to rock by itself, and loud banging has been heard. Another phantom is "an Elizabethan ghost" but it is unclear whether it is the woman mentioned above; she may be the phantom responsible for the sound of a rustling silk dress in the corridors. A phantom coach and horses has been seen heading toward the tower along a Roman road that is now overgrown. Additionally, a spectral woman walks her phantom dog in the grounds and a man in Tudor costume observed within the building. Security guards have seen a figure but it disappears when approached; and one visitor was even pushed in the face by a phantom woman. Update 8/4/22: Staff at the tower responded to my email asking about any recent sightings: "We do have visitors to the House (either as day visitors or part of our Guided Tours and Ghost Tours) who tell us of sightings, filming of orbs etc. This has been as recent as 2019 - then the Tower House has been closed for repairs and has only just re-opened in March 2022." Although the sighting of photographic orbs is attributable to dust and particulate matter close to the camera, I inquired about the 'sightings', and was told, "There have been various descriptions of sightings in various rooms of the Tower that cannot be substantiated." Attempts to obtain further information was fruitless: "I’m sorry I cannot furnish that information to you." Link: The Bolton News |
