Ye Olde Blue Belle(aka The Blue Bell) 114 Church Street, Preston, Lancashire PR1 3BS 01772 251280 This pub is believed to be haunted by 16 year old Ann Ratcliffe, the daughter of the landlord. As she and her fiance, John Simpson, headed to the local church to be wed in 1881, they stopped for a drink at the Sir Walter Scott pub in North Road, when he cut her throat with a razor stolen from a barber's shop earlier. Simpson claimed he did not know why he committed the murder and was subsequently hanged; Ann is now said to return to Ye Olde Blue Belle as a phantom. Another supposed apparition is an American soldier who was stabbed outside the pub in 1944 during a quarrel with a British soldier about the Battle of Arnhem. Link: Lancs Live |
