Wycoller Hall

The most famous phantom is Squire Cunliffe, who rides on horseback into the village and then enters the ruins of the hall, where "blood curdling screams" are heard. In one version of the tale, the screams are said to be because he beat his wife to death with a whip after finding her with another man; another version is that while Cunliffe was fox hunting, it entered the hall and ran up the stairs to his wife's room. She was so alarmed by the sound of her husband on horseback followed by hounds that she screamed in terror and, disgusted by her cowardice, he struck her with whip resulting in her dying of fright. The sound of a whip cracking has also been heard sometimes, as have the loud galloping sound of an invisible horse as it passes startled witnesses. A "Black Lady," dressed in silk, was originally seen in the hall but is now also seen in the surrounding area, especially at nearby Sally's bridge. According to legend, she was thrown over and drowned by her fiance who had changed his mind about marrying her and taking her to the Hall to live; however, some say that she is none other than Cunliffe's wife. Meanwhile in the village, a spectral coach and horses are reputed to be encountered when the wind and rain are torrential.
