The Saxon Inn

A spectral figure in a cowl is said to haunt this hotel. The phantom seems to enjoy playing pranks, such as throwing bottles of whisky down the cellar steps; but they never shatter, only bounce. A customer once had the annoying experience of his glass of beer sliding away from him. He yelled out for it to come back - and it did! Other accounts involve imminently departing landlords; one publican found that, just before he was due to leave the ghost had washed, dried and put away used glasses. Another landlord, at his farewell party, found that he needed to lie down due to the amount of alcohol he had consumed. He lay down on two chairs - and patrons saw the ghost hovering above him, both of its hands seemingly pressed down on the publican's chest.

Update 7/2/22: Proprietor Paul Hope responded to my query about any recent occurrences: "In the last 20 years, we have had some unusual things happen and sometimes on an evening we've seen shadows and felt a cold chill, always around the old part of the building (400 years old). We underwent major Refurb and extension about 3 years ago and I don't recall any issues since."
