Langley Castle Hotel

The "Grey Lady" seen here is believed to be Maud de Lucy, the widow of Sir Thomas, the man who created the castle. She died falling from the battlements and this has been re-enacted on several occasions; other versions of her death claim that she jumped from a window after hearing of his death at the Battle of Shrewsbury after keeping watch for his return from that very same window. Guests say that her phantom has been seen at that window, muttering her husband's name before jumping to her fate. She has also been seen in the Great Hall. A phantom bell and French voices have also been reported, as have visions of the castle being attacked by soldiers and burning; this may refer to an attack upon the castle in 1405 by Henry V's forces when the building was left derelict for some time.
