Glenapp Castle

Elsie Mackay, who lived here, aspired in 1928 to be the first woman to fly across the Atlantic but when she and her co-pilot left RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire heading west and cleared the Irish coast, they were never seen again. Only a wheel from her aircraft, bearing its serial number, washed ashore eight months later. A 2025 newspaper says that, "Yet some time later, on a predictably stormy night, guests in the Earl of Orkney suite at Glenapp reported seeing Elsie's ghost appear in what was described as a "blue flash". Fashionable as ever, her ghost was said to have walked down the halls dressed in a 1920s flapper outfit. Some staff at the hotel would continue to claim that the room was haunted. Others dismissed the tale."
