The “Grey Lady,” who is said to be a daughter of a lord in the Chancellor family, had an unfortunate end but there are multiple different tales of her fate. In the first variant, she was raped by soldiers and her child taken from her at birth and left to die, and in despair the poor girl killed herself soon afterwards. Or, some say that she had a relationship with the gamekeeper's son but their child was stillborn, and she “wept herself to death” when the baby was buried without her permission. Or, her father forbade her relationship with a local man and she killed herself. The dates for her tragic fate vary from the 14th century to the 1650s but there is nothing to corroborate the legend. Regardless of her origins, the phantom
has been seen in one of the rooms and also walking to her burial place in the grounds. Also experienced are the ghost of a butler, chairs moving by themselves, TV channels changing of their own accord, appliances activating for no reason, people feeling “tickles on the arm,” sensor lights being triggered and the sound of footsteps and thumps.
