It has been suggested in the past that the ghost here was a cook who had hanged himself in the kitchen from the overhead pipes. Reported phenomena include staff hearing crashing noises from the cellar, which was locked. As staff entered the cellar they saw a crate of mixers lift into the air and being flung across the room; the noises previously heard were made by two crates of empty mixer bottles and a crate of empty beer bottles being hurled around. There is, or was, said to be poltergeist activity in the bar, dining room and kitchen. Items, such as order pads, corkscrews, and a knife used to slice lemons, would go missing and later turn up in the dining room, kitchen or occasionally behind the reception desk. In addition, beer taps would be turned off in the cellar. On one occasion, a staff member who had been left to hold the fort in an otherwise empty hotel heard the noise of the front door swinging open, and looking up, she saw a tall figure wearing a long black coat (like a coachman's) and top hat, walk into the lobby and then go behind reception desk. When she checked there was no-one there.
