First and Last Inn

The ghost of Annie George, a 19th century tennant who came to a violent end, has been seen at the Inn. Manifestations include slamming doors, sensations of coldness and unseen hands pinning people to a bed, a black figure, pet cats found in closed drawers and wardrobes and the spillage of spirits and beer in locked rooms.

However, another version of the legend says that, "Annie Treeve was landlady at the First and Last, organising and taking part in wrecking and smuggling operations along with the local parson. Annie had a fall out with the local smuggling agent, farmer Dionysius Williams, turning Queen’s Evidence and reporting him to the authorities, which resulted in a long prison sentence for Dionysius. People in the community used to often benefit from the smuggling trade and were furious at what Annie had done. They took their revenge by pegging Annie out on the beach and leaving her there to drown on the incoming tide. Annie’s body was later laid out in one of the bedrooms at the inn until it could be buried in an unmarked grave in the churchyard next door. Today, Annie still has her own room at the First and Last, and she objects to anyone sleeping there. People staying in the room have reported dreams where they are drowning, held down by fishing nets, the exact same method used to murder Annie, and the ghostly figure of a woman has often been seen on the landing. Other people have reported something unseen touching their hair or have experienced a sudden, unexplained icy cold feeling in certain rooms."
