Drake's Islandaka "St Nicholas's Island" Plymouth, Devon PL1 3RT A 2025 newspaper reports that, "There have been reports of visitors being ‘poked and prodded’ in the Magazine Chambers, an area where gunpowder and ammunition was stored in the Second World War. In other island spots, soft footsteps have been heard and a shimmering figure in a bonnet and smock has been seen. These days, a ghostly white lady, walking and waiting, has reportedly been spotted by many on the island and there’s an ‘unfounded theory’ that it could be Sir Francis Drake's first wife, Mary, perhaps awaiting her husband's return." Mary died before he returned from a trip to sea and some say that the couple spent time on the island in their summer house. Link: Devon Live |
