Paul_Exeter of the Fortean forums used to work here from 1994-2003 and had heard a few tales; poltergeist activity from the adjacent kitchen and dining room in the form of loud unexplained bangs and crashes; an entity on the old disused staircase that was seen by a group of college lecturers who were drinking late at night, and seemed to be malevolent ("evil") and had a hooked nose "like Mr Punch"; and on two occasions staff in the bar who were finishing up late at night heard applause and audience 'chatter' coming from the locked and empty Great Hall. In 1929, Kay Starr saw a "Grey Lady" in the Great Hall (which was a ruin at that time) "and which dissolved through the oak door into the private house [now the Elmhirst Heritage Centre]..."
