Childe's Tomb

Dartmoor, Devon PL20 6SL

A rich merchant named Childe died here in 1340 when he was trapped in a blizzard. Despite killing his horse and climbing inside the carcass for warmth, he perished but left a note saying that whomever buried him could have his lands. This turned out to be monks of Tavistock, who have returned here as spectres, seen walking during winter months from the stone cross towards the direction of their home.
