Ye Olde Malthouse Inn

The most famous ghost here is "The Woman in Blue." According to the inn's website, "she tends to drift through the restaurant and occasionally rests a gentle hand on a diner’s shoulder. We’re fairly sure we know who she is - a woman well known and well loved locally in recent times. She’s never unwelcome." There is also said to be a highwayman on Church Hill, who followed a guest up the road and up the stairs to her room. He melted away when challenged. There are reputed to be ghostly children on the upper floors and they are often heard laughing, playing and running in the corridors. The children are sometimes seen sitting at the end of the bed when guests awaken, and their presence is often described as "a lovely, oddly reassuring experience" (though one guest did check out early!) There are also tales of doors heard banging shut by themselves, barrels shifting in the cellar when no one's down there, pictures leaping from the stone walls and vases that part company with the dresser "in spectacular fashion."
A blackboard in the inn records recent observations by people. These include footsteps and talking upstairs when there was no one there; a baby heard crying in the bar/restaurant area without explanation; a guest being woken by a woman poking her (another ghost woke from a bad dream with something touching her cheek); a broken bottle found in the cellar; a ghostly figure on the stairs and in a bedroom; a crashing noise heard at 2am in the bar; scratching sounds on bedroom floors; random unexplained knockings; and the sound of a baby's rattle.
