Some of the reports include footsteps (especially going up and down the stairs in the night), items moving and disappearing, the sensation of being nudged, the sound of breathing and laughter, bottles and glasses falling, being smashed or found broken on the floor and the owner's pets reacting to something invisible (usually in the upstairs rooms). The "aroma of the sea" is said to herald the presence of a spectral sailor, while cold spots and the scent of lavender water are associated with a female ghost (though there are some reports of "A Lady in White"); they were said to be lovers and vowed to marry when he returned from the sea. However, he did not return after there was a huge storm, and the lady (who was the landlady of the pub) feared that he had perished and hung herself in an upstairs room. However, the sailor did turn up a few days later and found his loved one dead and killed himself in despair. There are also unconfirmed stories that a 'a quiet female' has been heard crying repeatedly, "Help me!" A figure in a tricorn hat has been seen walking down the steps from the upstairs bar. In one striking incident, the landlord wanted to store some boxes in a room, so he moved a heavy piece of furniture away from the door. But moments later when he came back with the boxes, the furniture had been moved back against the door.
