A "Grey Lady" is said to haunt this building; she is described as being between 50 and 60 years old with a stern (or fierce face) and a grey veil. She is usually seen near the dressing rooms (one report specifies No.1) and the backstage area but has also been seen in the back of the auditorium, in the Royal Box and (perhaps) even in the nearby Colonnade Bar; she once walked through a wall where a doorway used to be in the theatre. However, despite her appearance, it said that she is kindly and not at all scary and is said to have given "a sweet smile" before vanishing. She is said to be either actress Sarah Bernhart, who injured her leg whilst performing here, her limb eventually requiring amuptating; or she maybe Elizabeth Nye Chart, the first female manager. There is said to be another female ghost, named "Myrtle of the Cirle," who walks around the Royal Circle, though this may be another version of "The Grey Lady" story. A former doorman also returns to haunt this building, and there are stories of seats being thumped and a pianist who went up to the balcony and found his hand temporarily "stuck" to the railing. A 2025 compendium of theatre ghosts adds, "Meanwhile, in the Phipps Room (which was originally part of the house), there is often a strong, but brief, smell of cigar smoke." Researcher Nat Doig tells us, as part of her Weird in the Wade podcast that the grey lady is seen in the front of house and back stage and sits in row G in the circle, where the seat will flip down when she is in residence. She also once messed around with Danny La Rue's wigs! There is also supposed to be the ghost of a little boy, an older gent and a cat!
