Preston Manor

A White Lady haunts this building, supposedly a nun who had been wrongly excommunicated. A child sobbing, the sound of angry adult voices and moaning and groaning have been heard, a "grey lady", people being locked inside rooms, doors being slammed, a disembodied hand and a possible phantom hound have also been reported here. Additionally, a woman in a long black gown has been observed walking through the French windows into the garden where she vanishes, and in the South West bedroom there have been cases of electrical interference, tappings and a new silk dress was found to have many diamond shaped holed punched through. There are many other stories too!

Nat Doig visited the Manor as part of her podcast series and included extracts of a conversation with Dan Cox, Head Guide for Brighton Museums. He said that the white lady with long blonde hair has been seen over hundreds of years. Also, some years previously, a party of students had visited and one of them had lingered in Ellen Stanforth's too long while his friends had left. The room steward heard him scream and when he came in, the student said that a man had shouted at him, "You mustn't be in here. Get out." He identified the man from a picture of Thea, who was Ellen's grandson and had died aged 26 in 1920.
In another incident, Dan had made the maid's bed and locked the room, and then left the house, locking up as he was the last one to leave. He was the first one in in the morning, and the bed was all messed up as if someone had slept in it. Dan also told of "The Angry Man" who growls in people's ears and said that one member of staff got shoved in the back as he walked across Charles Bedroom. In the Blue Room, which was a guest room and is now a study people have heard disembodied voices. There used to be a wardrobe where the desk is now and people staying here would find their dresses cut into diamond patterns in the morning. There was also a story of a disembodied hand climbing up the bedpost. During the interviews, there was some audible interference, causing a loud whirring noise which was only obvious on the recordings. There was also an unexplained smell of citrus in some areas which seemed to be intermittent.
