Hangleton Manor

Two spectral ladies haunt this pub, although one is said to be "more felt than seen," with people feeling her push them or moving past them; sometimes, her brown skirt has been seen. The other lady manifests as arms that emerge from the darkness. She is said to be a servant girl who fell pregnant by the lord of the manor who rejected her and she threw her baby out of the attic window in despair. Instantly regretting her hasty action, the girl reached out to save her child but she was too late and she is sometimes seen to this day. A phantom man wearing a white velvet cloak also infests this building.

Author Ruth Roper Wylde provides a few more details; In addition to heavy footsteps in an upstairs room, there is a male phantom wearing a velvet cloak accompanied by a jangling sound, perhaps the sound of spurs on boots? There are two female ghosts, one of whom emits "pitiful" screams in the night, and is said to be a servant who threw her newborn baby (and perhaps herself?) out of the window when she found out that she was pregnant. There is also the swishing sound of a skirt sometimes accompanied by a draft of cold air, and one witness in the 1970s described it as being brown in colour. The other (?) ghostly lady is seen standing at an upstairs window and is/was only ever seen outside the building. In the 1970s, a customer's dog would refuse to go into the snug, and glasses would be seen to slide off the bar unaided and smash on the floor; at other times, doors would bang shut, and lights would flicker. Two decades later, a customer was seated in a cubicle in the upstairs ladies toilets when the lights went out, at which point two "cold hands clamped down on her shoulders." The customer screamed and escaped from the room, and soon afterwards the toilets were declared closed and alternate toilets downstairs were to be used.
