When this was "The Wheatsheaves" (now closed), the ghost of "Fred" would announce its presence by the smell of kerosene, and it was thought that he was a resident who used to light up the lamps in the pre-electric days; his ghost might have been seen at least once, as an old man was seen by a customer in her peripheral vision sitting at the table by the window and the landlord placated her telling her that it was "Fred." A young girl was also seen on the upper floors, and a figure was seen going into the downstairs toilet area but there was no-one to be found when it was checked.
