Guildford Museum

Castle Arch, Quarry Street, Guildford, Surrey GU1 3SX
01483 444751

There are reports of a piano being played on the upper floors (in Victorian times this was preceded by the hazy shape of a woman entering the building via the castle grounds); and a white cloud that formed itself into the shape of a woman in the cellar was once seen. The figure then walked into a nearby wall where there had once been a staircase. On one occasion, a loud thud was heard on the top floor - staff have also heard someone running up the stairs to their office - but there was never anyone there. Phantom footsteps were also heard by the caretaker's wife who also noted the sound of someone entering the building and then their flat. The "intruder" walked up to the door, opened it six inches, then closed it before leaving the building. Afterwards, there was the familiar sound of someone running up the stairs (the caretaker had also experienced thuds and bangs in the early hours of the morning). In addition, voices, a dancing umbrella and other phenomena have been reported too!

Update: 6/3/20 Sarah Fairhurst, the Collections Manager of Heritage Services, informs me that, "Unfortunately none of our staff are aware of any recent “odd" or inexplicable phenomena at Guildford Museum."
