Sir Cloudesley Shovell donated the plaster ceilings and weather vane to the Guildhall, which was built to replace the original town hall. Shovell was a distinguished Fleet Admiral but on one occasion a navigational blunder resulted in his ships being grounded on rocks near the Isles of Scilly. Shovell managed to reach the shore but was murdered by a local woman for his gold rings. Although buried at Westminster Abbey, his ghost is seen in the museum, touching the shoulders of women who work there. A pale-faced male in a red frockcoat has also been seen.
