Waterside Youth and Community CentreWaldegrave Place, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 1DS 01635 018500 Built on site of old chapel and graveyard where it is said that "tormented souls" could be heard. According to legend, it is where a woman was shot by Parliamentarian soldiers during the civil war on suspicion that she was a witch. She was seen standing on a plank of wood on the river, seemingly commanding it to manoeuvre as she pleased; when she arrived at the bank, it was decided to execute her as she did not answer the troops' questions. After the church was demolished, another building on the spot had poltergeist-like behaviour with footsteps being heard and pots and pans being found moved. And while the current building was being constructed, steel was moved overnight, and builders felt taps on their shoulders. Link: Berkshire Live |
