Avebury Manor

A spectral carriage and two horses appears on the driveway and rides to the nearby Red Lion, where it vanishes.
A man in a wide-brimmed hat, sometimes described as being like a cavalier, has been seen in the garden of the manor and in the Cavalier Bedroom (now known as the Withdrawing Room), where he has been seen looking out of the window and seems to be crying. He may be the former owner of the Manor, Royalist Sir John Stawell, who was ruined when Cromwell's forces won the Civil War; he was imprisoned in the Tower of London for 11 years and was then allowed to return home but died after two years.
A monk in a black habit has been observed in areas of the house and in the garden and the churchyard; the colour of the robe is indicative of the Benedictine order, who had a small French priory on the site. Weird Wiltshire tells us, "[The monk] was seen as early as 1537 in the dining room by a then maid of the house." He was seen by an au pair in the library in the 20th century and she talked to him asking if he was staying for lunch (it is not known if he replied) but the family who were in the same room saw no such figure there.
In the Crimson Room, along with strange sounds, all the windows have from time to time been found open and rose petals found scattered on the floor; the smell of roses is said to herald Stawell's appearance (confusingly, some of these phenomena have been claimed for the Withdrawing room, as mentioned above).
A White/Grey Lady has also been seen in the house and gardens; in the house, she descends the staircase, while outside she follows men. Sadly, the story that she taps them on the shoulder seems to be a recent fabrication. A worker also saw a "pretty" lady appear near a gate as he left the manor to go home. She was wearing white lace and wearing a white hood, like a nun. Weird Wiltshire tells us that, "she took hold of [his] shoulders and turned him around before pushing him away..." This has happened on at least two other occasions.
In additional, a phantom cat has been heard crying in the Stables Museum!
