Bisham Abbey

The remorseful spectre of Dame Elizabeth Hoby has been said to walk the Abbey and its grounds; her son William lacked her scholarly ability and she would often beat him out of frustration. One day, she locked him in a cupboard but was unexpectedly called to London to attend Queen Elizabeth I, forgetting to tell her servants where her son was to be found. When she returned, William had starved to death. Since then, the Dame's ghost has been seen washing blood from her hands using a basin of water that floats in front of her, and her crying and footsteps heard. Interestingly, her ghost is said to be like a photographic negative, with black face and hands, and a white dress. One lady guest who stayed in the abbey during World War 1 said Lady Hoby "violently rearranged her room before appearing in a white garment at the end of her bed."
