Malmesbury Abbey Ruins

The ruined arches and walls of this abbey plays host to a spectral monk, but he is never seen for long. The local story is that the monk was from the 11th century and was named Eilmer (or Elmer); based on his study of birds, he constructed a glider to carry him from the abbey tower, albeit earning himself a broken leg (or two!) upon landing. His landing resulted in permanent lameness. Further thoughts of flight were quashed by the abbot. His ghost has also been seen climbing the tower and walking amongst the graves, where he seems to be searching for something. He raises his hands as if giving thanks and then sinks to the floor, vanishing from slight. In the cemetary, a black robed Benedictine monk has been seen, and chanting and singing heard coming from the Abbey after dark.
