The Red Lion

The Street, Castle Eaton, Wiltshire SN6 6JZ
01285 706533

A ghost in dark clothing, silver buckles on its shoes - and no face - has been seen here; the phantom violently shook the landlady awake one night and seemed to be "hanging on the wall", possibly because the floor level has changed over the centuries. Cold spots, items being thrown and moved around and "thumping" up and down the staircase have been blamed on him/her. Heavy footsteps in inaccessible areas have also been reported, as have the spectres of a little girl and a dog.

Update 11/5/22: I emailed the pub asking about any recent occurrences and Mark Stone replied, saying "How interesting but not to my knowledge. People have said they was a ghosts here but along time ago." I sent a follow-up email two years later and Carrie Rivett replied on 2/2/24; "Mark and I have been here for the last 3 years and have made a few changes to the building (not the original as this is listed). Many local people have their stories and experiences from the pub as it is so old and stooped in history, but as far as personal experiences go, we have not seen or heard anything spooky or out of the ordinary."
