Missenden Abbey (Closed)

London Road, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire HP16 0BD
01494866811

A "Black Monk" has been seen in the grounds, sometimes heading east towards the church of St Peter and St Paul. He is sometimes said to be carrying a sword. The monks who worshipped here would often use a secret tunnel to visit a tavern in the village and thence off to London to indulge in more earthy pleasures. One of the monks was caught in indulgence with a nun and was executed as a lesson - his cries have been heard in the building. However, the manager of the Abbey has said that the monk has not been seen in recent years. The figure of an old woman in a crinoline dress has also been seen floating down the stairs and near the women's cloakroom - she has been described as being dressed in grey, black or white.
