Blackfriar's Priory

via Sacra, Ladybellegate Street, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GL1 2HN
01452 396384

A monk in a long black robe has been seen here, kneeling in prayer in front of the location where the altar would have been. After a few moments, he jumps to his feet and runs out of the building, clutching his head which can be seen to have bad scarring and a gaping wound. After a few seconds, he vanishes uttering a loud scream. However, other reports simply say that a spectral monk is seen running from the church with blood issuing from a wound in his head. This monk may be the one seen standing by the church door, and also the one seen kneeling in prayer as mentioned above. One witness, Alice Godfrey in 1870 managed to encounter the phantom monk on an occasion when he wasn't fleeing injured from the church; the sight of his "haggard, grey face and wild, staring eyes" caused her to faint! Heavy footsteps, perhaps those of the monk's (?) have also been heard too, as have the sound of a crying child, seemingly coming from the dungeon area.
